Elonex One Next Generation Laptop AKA Netbook - Review

Finally, the company has started the dispatches of the much talked about, Britain's cheapest sub notebook Elonex One. Elonex One has been targeted at the school segment to increase the level of computer literacy in the country.

In a word...

Offers definitive portability with small form factor framework
User friendly "what you see is what you get" interface
Classroom based educational programs
Wireless internet access with interactive learning tools

The features

At a price of 99 British Pounds, the notebook offers a value for money proposition. To keep the costs down, the company has provided Linos as the pre installed operating system, which is based on Linux. It has Wi-Fi connectivity, Ethernet networking, a solid-state hard drive, two USB ports, two mouse emulators and weighs less than 1 kg. I can't imagine anything better at such a price.

The sub notebook has LNX Code 8 Mobile 300 MHz Processor with a Dedicated Linux Memory 128Mb DDR-II SD RAM (which has been upgraded to256Mb in new model), on-board 1Gb Flash Memory, optimized for Linux (upgraded to 2Gb in new model). Though I feel that a diagonal screen size of 7" is bit small but then it's a sub notebook. With a high-resolution TFT LCD display, it makes up for its small screen.

It won't be wrong to call it a small wonder with dimensions of 22 x 15 x 3 cm and a weight that will hardly tilt the scales to one Kg. Outer rubberized skin is interchangeable. Though the size is small but still I find its splash proof, detachable QWERTY keyboard comfortable to work with. For connectivity, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and blue tooth are available. That makes is comparable with latest more expensive machines.

With Linos as the operating system, the machine is no more looking for more memory and hardware resources as it happens with any of the present Windows based operating systems. The Linux based operating system has the adequate speed to ensure the productivity.

It has two USB ports to ensure that other devices like printers; pen drives etc. can be attached with the machine. The two in built speakers let you enjoy your favorite music. The integrated three-cell battery has approximately four hours usage.

With all the features included, the notebook comes at a highly affordable price of 99 British Pounds or $185 (approx.)
